The Scottish Government has released the latest official annual Children's Social Work Statistics, covering child protection processes from August 2022 to July 2023. Key findings include a 4% increase in the number of children on the Child Protection Register compared to the previous year, with 5% of them not yet born. Additionally, there was a 2% decrease in the number of children registered onto the Child Protection Register during the same period.

Together has been working closely with our members and supporters to develop our approach for our State of Children's Rights Report 2024. Between October – December 2023, we conducted a series of interviews with 11 organisations to support early planning around methodologies and resources. Since February 2024, we have been working closely with five organisations as part of a ‘Development Phase’ engaging with babies, children and young people and providing feedback on our draft facilitator and child-friendly resources, which will be used to support this next phase.

It is no longer mandatory for the UN to provide online participation for official UN meetings, including those held by the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, which will limit the direct participation of civil society organisations, children and young people in the UN Treaty Review process. The International Service for Human Rights has gathered over 220 signatures from civil society organisations including Together, endorsing a letter that advocates for ensuring live online mechanisms of participation are maintained.

South Africa presented its case at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), alleging Israel had committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. The Order of 26 January 2024 by the International Court of Justice established that there is a real and imminent risk of irreparable damage to some of the rights asserted by South Africa and instructed Israel to prevent its military from committing acts which might be considered genocidal, to prevent and punish incitement to genocide, and to enable humanitarian assistance to the people of Gaza.

To mark World Children's Day 2023, Together released new research on the participation of children and young people in processes to monitor UNCRC implementation at local, national and international level.
