Together held a series of webinars in October 2022!
These webinars aimed to gather information about the state of children’s rights in Scotland.
The information shared during these webinars will help us write a report to the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child about what things are really like for children and families in Scotland. The UN Committee will then make recommendations to UK and Scottish governments on how to improve things for children. These recommendations can help us to secure real change!
Prior to holding this webinar series, we launched a survey open to children, young people, parents, organisations and interested individuals. Responses highlighted that the following four areas were key areas of concern:
- Children's health and standard of living
- Children's right to an education
- Protecting children from harm
- Children whose rights are most at risk
During the webinars, we were joined by expert speakers to deliver presentations on these key areas of concern. Participants then split into breakout rooms where they shared some of their case studies, evidence and recommendations they would like the UN Committee to make to UK and Scottish Governments. These breakout rooms focused on a theme related to the key areas of concern and were facilitated by a range of fantastic specialist organisations
Webinar 1: Children's health and standard of living
Our keynote speaker was John Dickie, Director of Child Poverty Action Group in Scotland, who delivered an insightful presentation on child poverty in Scotland.
Webinar 2: Children's right to education
Dr Colin Morrison, Co-director of Children's Parliament, spoke to attendees about the aims of education set out in Article 29 of the UNCRC and guided us through consultation work with children on their experiences of the Scottish education system.

Webinar 3: Protecting children from harm
Joe McGinty, Protecting Children Consultant at CELCIS, reflected on child rights-based developments in the child protection system and what more improvement is needed.

Webinar 4: Supporting children whose rights are most at risk
Bruce Adamson, Children and Young People's Commissioner Scotland, reflected on the risks and benefits of focusing on narrower groups of children when discussing rights.
