A judge surrounded by children

Clan Childlaw is pleased to share a newly launched resource that reflects the child-centred approach that is at the heart of its work. The resource sets out to ensure that regardless of their age, children are at the centre of decision making.

The Good Practice Guide for Solicitors in the children’s hearing system is grounded in the child-centred legal practice Clan Childlaw has been developing through its day-to-day work with children and young people and strengthened by child-led research.

The Guide was developed by Clan Childlaw in collaboration with Our Hearings, Our Voice, the Scottish Children’s Reporter Administration, Children’s Hearings Scotland, the Civil Legal Assistance Office, Children first, advocacy providers and solicitors.

It is designed to support solicitors to:

  • Work confidently and ethically with children

  • Communicate clearly and accessibly

  • Ensure children’s rights are upheld in practice, not just on principle

  • Navigate hearing sin a way that keeps the child at the centre of decision-making
