UNICEF UK ran a workshop on sustainable development at 'Taking the Rights Steps Children's Rights: Wales and the World', a major international conference that focused on the human rights of children and young people, and was held at Swansea University supported by the Welsh Government.

The workshop covered sustainability from the child rights perspective and focused on the Rio+20 Summit, UNICEF's work in this area, and the post-Millennium Development Goal (MDG) agenda.

The Children and Young People's Measure, which came in to force on 1 May 2012, puts Wales ahead of the rest of the UK in using legislation to implement the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC). The new law requires Welsh Ministers to consider children's rights, as recognised in international human rights law, across all areas of devolved government.

On June 11 the Swansea University also launched a Wales Observatory on Human Rights of Children and Young People, a new collaborative project committed to building capacity to support children and young people's access to their rights, conducting research and lobbying for change in law and practice. UNICEF UK is looking forward to working together with the Wales Observatory.
