Young people speak up for their rights

On Saturday 7 July 2012, children and young people from across Britain travelled to London to have their say on the future protection of human rights in the UK at a special consultation day organised by the British Institute of Human Rights and the Rights of the Children Coalition UK (ROCK).

Children and young people got together to tell Professor Philippe Sands QC, a member of the Commission on a British Bill of Rights, exactly what they think the Commission should tell the Government about human rights laws In the UK.

The young people there spoke about a range of issues including children's rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, and controversial human rights issues (should prisoners have the right to vote?). Professor Sands faced some tough questions, listened with great interest and told participants what they had to say matters. Their key message to the Commission (and Government) was clear: 'Keep our Human Rights Act and build on it!'
