The SHRC is issuing a joint report with other national human rights institutions and equality bodies to inform the CRPD into the human rights of disabled people in the UK. Read on to find out how the situation has developed since the CRPD’s inquiry in 2016.
The findings are part of a new, joint report the SHRC is issuing to the UN Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) alongside other national human rights institutions and equality bodies, which form the United Kingdom Independent Mechanism (UKIM).
UKIM is a body which monitors how well the state is protecting and promoting the human rights of disabled people.
The SHRC has published a supplementary report from a coalition of Scottish Disabled People’s Organisations, which was informed by the Scottish Independent Living Coalition SILC report.
In the report, the SHRC informs the Committee how the cost of living crisis, COVID-19 and leaving the European Union have all had a dramatic and cumulative impact on human rights for disabled people, including rising poverty rates and threats to independent living. It is noted that social care in Scotland faces several crisis and that despite policy that aims to give individuals more choice and control, many disabled people are denied their right to autonomy.
In June, the Committee on the Rights of the Child made various recommendations to the Scottish Government and UK to improve the rights of children with disabilities. These include to increase efforts to eliminate discrimination and bullying on the grounds of disability and to strengthen its data-collection system with regard to both qualitative and quantitative indicators to encompass all areas of the Convention and ensure that the data are disaggregated by various grounds, notably disability.
