On the 16th of January 2024, royal assent was granted for the UNCRC Bill meaning its now officially an Act!  Most of its provisions will come into force in six months’ time (16th July 2024).

The UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill was unanimously passed in Scottish Parliament on 7th of December 2023. It was a historic day for children, young people and all those that advocated for UNCRC incorporation. For over 10 years, children, young people and adults have stepped up to lead this important campaign and their hard work finally paid off.

Incorporation of the UNCRC into Scots law is a vital step to ensuring children and young people have their rights recognised and protected. This Act will help ensure that children’s rights are at the heart of policy and decision making.

We celebrated with our incredible young human rights defenders together with MSPs, government officials and other supporters at the Scottish Parliament. We even took some great photos to capture the moments using our photo frame. It was indeed a day of celebration for us!

The granting of royal assent on 16th of January 2024 marks the final step of making the Bill into an Act of Parliament. Most of its provisions will come into force in six months (16th July 2024).

A big congratulations to all the children, young people and their supporters who have got us to this point.
