The UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has announced the cancellation of its May 2024 pre-session due to the UN liquidity crisis. The UN Committee has expressed its deep concern that the scheduled opportunities to consult with children have to be postponed. They are also very concerned that their engagement with representatives of civil society and UN Agencies have been removed from the calendar.

The cancelled pre-session would have examined the child rights records of eight countries, including Ecuador, Ethiopia, and Iraq, addressing issues such as violence, attacks on schools, and ill-treatment in detention centres.

The Committee reaffirms its commitment to children worldwide, as well as its valued civil society and UN partners, promising to seek alternative avenues for engagement.

Civil society organisations have expressed their deep concerns about the implications of this measure especially the impact on children and civil society representatives from the countries scheduled for the pre session that have been preparing for months to interact with the committee. In a joint letter to all permanent missions to the United Nations and to the UN Secretary-General signed by over 150 NGOs including Together, urged the UN Member States worldwide to comply with their financial commitments to the UN by paying their fees to the UN in full and without delay so as to ensure that the Committee on the Rights of the Child and the UN human rights system as a whole can continue its critical work.
