The Human Rights Consortium Scotland has called on both the UK and Scottish Governments to demonstrate leadership on human rights. In an article published in The Herald, it expressed concern that devolution challenges—such as those which restricted the scope of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) Act could similarly limit the effectiveness of the forthcoming Scottish Human Rights Bill.

The forthcoming Human Rights Bill for Scotland,  aims to incorporate more international human rights into Scots law and hold public authorities accountable for economic, social, environmental, and cultural rights. It will be a major step towards tackling poverty and improving public services, two of the First Minister’s priorities.

The Consortium has written to Scottish Secretary Ian Murray, urging him to amend the Scotland Act to restore and reset devolution. At the same time, the Scottish Government is being called upon to act quickly by pushing for the introduction of the Human Rights Bill, without delay.
