Scottish Government has reiterated its commitment to fully incorporate the UNCRC as a matter of urgency. The statement came as opposition parties united in calling for progress on the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill following the UK Supreme Court’s judgment in June 2021.

Sarah Boyack MSP has asked the Minister for Children and Young People, Claire Haughey, whether she can provide an update on Scottish Government’s plans to incorporate the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) into Scots Law. This comes after the Supreme Court Judgement on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill which deemed parts of the bill out with Scottish Government’s competence.

The report analyses evidence gathered from individuals and groups who would be impacted by the Bill – including engagement sessions with children and young people. The Equalities and Human Rights Committee unanimously recommends that the Scottish Parliament agree to the general principles of the Bill, while identifying some areas in need of further consideration.
