Join us for an interactive online training workshop that will support your understanding of how to implement the five principles of a Children’s Human Rights Approach in your work and organisation. The UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Act 2024 brought important children’s rights protections into law in Scotland, and taking a Children’s Human Rights Approach is crucial to ensure that children’s rights are implemented in practice.

The workshop aims to equip attendees with:

  • An understanding of a Children’s Human Rights Approach
  • How they can consider children’s rights in their work
  • Knowledge of the five principles of a Children’s Human Rights Approach
  • Ideas for how to implement the five principles in their working practice
  • Resources for further study

You do not need any prior children’s rights knowledge to attend this course. All attendees will receive a participants pack to get familiar with materials in advance of the session.

Together NGO Members save 35% on this training course – consider joining Together to save money on training and have access to a range of membership benefits.

Why train with Together?

For 25 years, Together has been supporting organisations and individuals from a range of backgrounds and roles to improve their awareness and understanding of children’s human rights in practice. This has included work with partners on the Skills and Knowledge project, which explores what professionals need to know and apply to be able to implement children’s human rights. A key element of the work was testing the principles of a Children’s Human Rights Approach (CHRA) and building a skills and knowledge framework and training plan around these principles, which has been informed by extensive engagement with our Professional Panel, a Children and Families Panel run by Children’s Parliament, and a wider range of stakeholders.

Together works collaboratively with our 600 members to get insights into the lives of babies, children and young people and how they experience their rights. This informs all of our work, including our training, producing our annual State of Children’s Rights Report, monitoring rights issues through our #RightsonTrack work and learning from our Rights Detectives. Our experience means Together can support staff to identify situations in which they are already implementing children’s rights in practice, alongside further opportunities to use a Children’s Human Rights Approach in their roles.

About the trainers

Sarah McDermott is Together’s Development Manager. She has extensive experience in children’s human rights, working with members on what children’s rights look like in practice. Prior to working at Together, she has worked for both the Children and Young People’s Commissioner Scotland Office and the Jersey Children’s Commissioner’s Office, and holds a Masters in Human Rights Law.

Mary Campbell is Together’s UNCRC Implementation Officer, with extensive experience working in the public sector. At Together she worked on the Children's Rights Skills and Knowledge Framework and Training Plan, which developed the children's human rights approach that will be the focus of the training session.
