Respect for the views of the child
The Scottish Government is consulting on a a Rights of Children and Young People Bill, to be brought forward in 2012.
On September 7th, the Scottish Government took a significant step towards enshrining children's rights into law by publishing proposals to create a duty on Ministers to give due regard to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) when carrying out their functions.
The UNCRC spells out the basic human rights of children up to the age of 18 everywhere. The Scottish Government's approach to children's rights is already firmly based on the UNCRC. The Bill will ensure that all Scottish Government policy and legislation takes account of the rights of children and young people and can be framed in such a way as to promote and secure those rights.
Deadline: 1st December 2011
