Together responds to draft UK UNCRC periodic report

The UK is due to submit its next (fifth) periodic report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child in early in 2014, and Together responded to the call for views on the draft report.

Every state that has ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) is required to report to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child on how it is fulfilling its obligations. These periodic reviews are expected to happen every 5 years.

The UK Department for Education welcomed comments from civil society on the draft version of this report.

Together's response to the call for views specifically focuses on the extent to which the UK Government report succeeds in reflecting the extent to which the UNCRC is being implemented in Scotland. Together consults widely with its membership through seminars, meetings and ongoing face-to-face consultation and has just published its 2013 State of Children's Rights report for Scotland. Together's response is based on the evidence received from members and included within the State of Children's Rights reports.

The Scottish Government submitted a report to the UK Government in summer 2013 in preparation for the UK periodic report. It builds on the Government's 'Do the Right Thing' report and highlights priorities for implementing the UNCRC in Scotland.
