Brexit: European Scrutiny Committee response and consultation

Together made a submission in partnership with the Children's Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) to urge the Committee to place a particular focus on considering the rights of children and young people.

The European Scrutiny Committee at Westminster examines European Union (EU) documents and reports those it considers of legal or political importance to the House to Commons. The Committee recently called for submissions to inform its considerations as to how its scrutiny role should adapt to Brexit.

Together made a submission in partnership with the Children's Rights Alliance for England to urge the Committee to place a particular focus on considering the rights of children and young people. We urged the European Scrutiny Committee hold the UK Government to account in ensuring that all decisions made around the UK's future relationship with the EU are assessed for their impact on children and young people and are informed by their views. Furthermore, we stressed the importance of ensuring children and young people across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are engaged in the process at all stages - this is especially important given that 16 and 17-year-olds were denied a vote in the referendum and that the overall vote for the UK to leave the EU went against the views of the majority of children and young people. The Committee must ensure scrutiny of the impact that Brexit will have on the lives of all children and young people for years to come.
