Joining Together on placement, Siti will be completing a research project analysing the impact of the Human Rights Act 1998 from a children’s rights perspective. Siti will be drawing out learning from this Act to inform Scotland’s implementation of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill.

After four years of working as an advocate and solicitor in Malaysia, Siti decided to further her postgraduate study to enhance her proficiency and understanding about human rights, in particular, women’s and children’s rights - a passion and interest that Siti developed while practicing as a lawyer and from her participation in NGOs.

Siti moved to Edinburgh to undertake her LLM in Human Rights at the University of Edinburgh in September 2020. To gain practical experience to compliment her coursework, Siti is delighted to join Together as part of her work-based placement - an opportunity that Siti has set her eyes on while undertaking her study.

It is an exciting time to be involved with Together and children’s rights in Scotland as in March 2021, the Scottish Parliament unanimously passed the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill which will make children’s rights justiciable in Scottish courts. It also comes as Scotland moves towards incorporating wider international human rights treaties through the work of the National Taskforce on Human Rights Leadership.

Siti is looking forward to continue learning and researching as well as to contribute to the development of children’s rights at a national level, here in Scotland.

Welcome Siti!
