July began with Alcohol Awareness week and Alcohol Focus Scotland’s #InYourFace campaign showed the powerful impact that alcohol marketing has on children. You can still check out loads of great resources and hear what children and young people have to say about alcohol advertising in Scotland.
Alcohol advertising can have a huge influence on children and young people and their right to health by normalising alcohol or encouraging them to start drinking early. Alcohol Focus Scotland has worked with children and young people on its #InYourFace campaign where they reported alcohol advertising being a prominent feature of childhood and a young person’s life.
Earlier this year, the Scottish Government consulted on alcohol advertising and promotion to consider introducing restrictions. The consultation closed in March and the following month, the First Minister announced the plans were being put on hold.
In our recent State of Children’s Rights Report, Together brought the issue of alcohol advertising to the attention of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. We recomended that the Scottish Government ensure children’s engagement in the alcohol marketing consultation and future action to implement its findings, to better protect children’s right to health and reduce health inequalities.
