A new Nordic-style "Open Kindergarten" is being tested in Scotland, with plans for possible expansion across the country. It was launched at a special event in Bonnyrigg, bringing together early childhood experts, local decision-makers, charities, and parents.

Open Kindergartens, which are widely used in Nordic countries, offer regular meeting spaces where parents, carers, and young children can gather and receive guidance from qualified early years staff. The goal is to strengthen parents’ and carers’ skills, confidence, and knowledge in supporting their children.

The project is led by Parenting Across Scotland, in partnership with Midlothian Sure Start, Children in Scotland, and the Open University. Funding comes from the Scottish Government’s Whole Family Wellbeing Fund.
