Scottish Government launches child rights report to mark World Children’s Day

Date: 20th November 2024
Category: General measures of implementation

This report provides an update on the delivery of commitments outlined in Scottish Government’s action plan ‘Progressing the human rights of children in Scotland: action plan 2021 to 2024’.

The report reflects on the central role that children and young people have played in the campaign for incorporation, the reconsideration of the UNCRC Bill, reporting to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, awareness and understanding efforts and much more.

It highlights key activities undertaken under each of the Action Plan 2021-24’s key strands, namely:

  1. Scottish Government leadership for children's rights
  2. Empowering children and young people to claim their rights
  3. Embedding children's rights in public services
  4. Children’s rights resolution

Scottish Government notes that this is the latest in a series of reports it has published over the years as part of its commitment to embedding children’s rights. The previous reporting duties have now been replaced by provisions of the UNCRC Act which entered into force earlier this year. As such, future updates will be shared through the Children’s Rights Scheme and corresponding duty to report on the Scheme. The first Children’s Rights Scheme is expected to be laid before the Scottish Parliament in early 2025.
