xThe State of the World's Children 2024
Date: 11th December 2024
Category:
General measures of implementation, General principles
The 2024 State of the World’s Children report from UNICEF explores three major trends that will profoundly affect children’s lives by 2050: demographic changes, the climate and environmental crises, and advances in technology. It urges global action to shape a better future for children based on the principles of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC).
The global child population is expected to stabilise at 2.3 billion by the 2050s, but regions like Africa and South Asia will see significant shifts, straining already limited resources and infrastructure. The report also underscores the devastating impact of climate change, with extreme weather disrupting education for 400 million children since 2022 and displacing many from their homes. Technological advances hold promise but require urgent investments to bridge the digital divide, ensuring children have access to the tools and skills they need to thrive in the future. The report projects that by 2050, newborn survival rates will exceed 98%, life expectancy will rise, and child survival rates will continue to improve.
The report call on governments, businesses, and civil society to act now, prioritising education, climate resilience, and digital access to secure a sustainable and equitable world for every child.
