A new report from Northern Ireland’s Executive Office highlights the ongoing crisis of violence against women and girls. The report, Ending Violence Against Women and Girls: Adult Experiences and Attitudes in Northern Ireland 2023, reveals troubling gender disparities and the urgent need for action.

The Northern Ireland Commissioner for Children and Young People (NICCY), Chris Quinn, expressed concern over femicide in Northern Ireland, with 25 women killed since 2020. The report also showed that 10% of sexual violence reports come from women, compared to 4% from men, underscoring the need for greater awareness and education.

He stated: During the various stops we made on our recent Road to Rights Bus Tour across Northern Ireland, many of the young girls raised their concerns about misogyny and patriarchy. We all need to be working together to change this mindset, with government, schools and communities to instil values of respect, consent, and accountability.”

The Commissioner has consistently advocated for comprehensive, age-appropriate Relationship and Sexuality Education (RSE) in schools. Such education is seen as crucial for reshaping attitudes and fostering healthy relationships.
