xYouth Select Committee publishes report investigating links between social media and youth violence
Date: 30th April 2025
Category:

The Youth Select Committee published a report into the links between youth violence and social media. Led by 12 young members aged between 14 and 19 and supported by the House of Commons, the inquiry heard evidence in December 2024 and received 14 written submissions.
Wania, who chairs the Youth Select Committee warned that a full social media ban (as seen in Australia) may not be practical or effective, tech companies must be made accountable and must do far more to shield young people from the violent and harmful content.
Together published its response to the UK Youth Select Committee's enquiry which can be found here. Drawing on the State of Children’s Rights Report 2024 and the UNCRC’s 2023 concluding observations, Together highlighted the urgent need for safer and more child-friendly digital spaces. Together also called on social media platforms to strengthen safeguards and design dedicated environments where young people can interact without exposure to harmful content.
