xNew blog: Humanist Society Scotland on children's rights and Religious Observance
Date: 1st December 2025
Category:
Respect for the views of the child, Freedom of thought, conscience and religion
The blog also shares lived experiences of children, parents and teachers who describe feelings of exclusion, pressure to participate in RO and a lack of clear communication from schools about when RO takes place. It also highlights ongoing challenges faced by families when attempting to withdraw their children, despite having a legal right to do so under the Education (Scotland) Act 1980.
Humanist Society Scotland emphasises that giving children themselves the right to opt out of RO is essential for meeting recommendations from the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child and will ensure pupils' views and beliefs are fully respected.
