The Scottish Government introduced a Care Leaver Payment to help young people overcome financial barriers as they leave care and move into independent living.
The Care Leaver Payment was introduced on 1 April 2026 to help young people overcome financial barriers as they leave care and move into independent living. There are no restrictions on what the £2000 payment can be spent on, however young people will receive support in deciding how to best use their grant.
Scottish Government has provided guidance for the young people leaving care, as well as the practitioners that work with them, on who is eligible and how to receive the Care Leaver Payment.
