On 2 March 2026, the UK Government opened a consultation on measures to protect children in a world of rapid technological change. The consultation covers various topics within the sphere of life online, including a social media ban for under-16s across the UK, restrictions on ‘infinite scrolling’, changes to the age of digital consent, and limitations on VPN usage, amongst others.

According to a press release, the UK Government seeks to address these issues of online safety as quickly as possible after the consultation closes.

Together is committed to working with our members to produce a response to the consultation, and we encourage members to send us any resources/evidence that they would like us to consider in our response. We urge the UK Government to consider proposals that strike a balance between the appropriate safeguards to protect children and young people from the potential harms of the digital world, on the one hand, and their UNCRC rights to information, expression, and education, on the other."
