Human Rights Council gathering evidence on children’s rights in digital environment

Under Human Rights Council Resolution 56/6, the OHCHR must convene five regional consultations to assess the risks to child safety in the digital environment and the best practices to tackle such issues, with regard for both current and emerging business models.

The consultations are underpinned by five themes, with artificial intelligence (AI) as a common undercurrent. They will cover a) risks and harms in the digital environment; b) children’s participation, empowerment and equality; c) state obligations and regulatory responses; d) responsibilities of business enterprises, and e) digital safety, privacy, and rule of law.

The five sessions are to be held online between August and November 2026, with an additional in-person session in Geneva. Based on the regional perspectives gathered from the consultations, as well as any insights emerging from a global call for written inputs, OHCHR will publish a report summarising its findings and recommendations put forward by participating stakeholders. The report is to be presented to the Human Rights Council at its 64^th session in February/March 2027.

This is now accepting registrations via this online form. All stakeholders with relevant expertise, such as the private sector, academics, civil society, and young people are encouraged to take part.
