UK Government has launched a consultation in response to new EU laws around toy safety. UK Government is seeking views on the benefits and costs of implementing a similar approach within the UK.

The EU’s new Toy Safety Regulation came into force at the start of this year. UK Government notes that it echoes many of its own objectives to ensure toys are safe for children while also supporting innovation and trade.

UK Government is reviewing areas such as chemical safety, digital product passports, online marketplace obligations, and emerging risks associated with AI-enabled or connected toys.

The call seeks views on four key areas:

1. The potential benefits and costs of the UK taking a similar approach to that set out in the EU’s new toy safety law;

2. The potential benefits and costs of continuing recognition of EU toys requirements, including the “CE” marking;

3. How risks to consumers may be changing, including from chemicals, AI and online marketplaces; and

4. The practicalities and impacts of any changes.

Anyone with an interest can respond – including child safety organisations, consumers and members of the public.
