Judges, academics and children’s rights experts from across Europe gathered in Zeist, the Netherlands, earlier this year for the Voice of the Child conference, focusing on how children can be better heard in court proceedings.

The event featured the premiere of three films showing real family law and child protection cases in Belgium, Bulgaria and Italy. A new training manual, developed by Leiden Law School, was also launched to help judges improve children’s participation in legal decisions that affect them.

The conference was part of a two-year project funded by the European Commission to promote child-friendly justice. It provided an opportunity for professionals to share experiences and explore how continued training can help ensure children’s views are heard and considered in court.
