The Scottish Forum on Social Isolation and Loneliness met online to explore how schools, communities and services can help children and young people experiencing loneliness.

Co-chaired by Susan Hunter, CEO of Befriending Networks, and Paul Okroj of Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland, the meeting brought together organisations and professionals to discuss friendship, belonging, bullying, youth work and the barriers that prevent young people from building meaningful relationships.

A keynote presentation by Dr Helen MacIntyre highlighted research in two secondary schools in England. The research found that loneliness can be difficult to identify because young people may feel lonely even when they appear to have an active social life. Bullying, difficulties making friends and feeling excluded can all contribute to loneliness.

The discussion highlighted how schools can help by creating inclusive activities, providing access to trusted adults and reviewing everyday practices that may separate pupils from their peers. Support must also avoid making children feel singled out or embarrassed.

Scotland’s national anti-bullying service, respectme, stressed that bullying can make loneliness worse by leaving children feeling excluded and believing they do not fit in. Early support, positive friendships and caring adults are important in helping children feel accepted.

Participants also discussed the role of digital spaces, recognising that online connections can both cause exclusion and help young people find friendship. They called for greater understanding of the experiences of groups who may face additional barriers, including disabled pupils, young carers and LGBTQ+ young people.

The meeting report is now available and includes a summary of the presentations and discussions, alongside links to further research, resources and opportunities to take action on loneliness among children and young people.
