Open Kindergarten offers new learning opportunities

The Open Kindergarten programme is a Scotland-wide initiative supporting early years professionals to strengthen support for families with young children. Delivered by Children in Scotland, Parenting Across Scotland and Midlothian Sure Start, the programme is funded through the Scottish Government’s Whole Family Wellbeing Fund.

Inspired by approaches used in Nordic countries, Open Kindergarten provides welcoming, non-stigmatising support where parents, carers and young children can access help without referrals or formal barriers. The approach aims to provide early support, reduce isolation and strengthen family wellbeing. Following pilot work in Edinburgh and Midlothian, the programme is now focused on expanding the approach across Scotland, particularly reaching families experiencing poverty and disadvantage.

From October 2026 to March 2027, the fully funded learning programme will offer information sessions, group skills training, training in Facilitating Attuned Interactions (FAN), and communities of practice where practitioners can share experiences and learn from one another. The programme is open to people working in the early years sector, particularly those already using or interested in the Open Kindergarten approach.
