Children shared how they often feel powerless and judged in their own experiences of justice. Children also highlighted the role adults play in creating both just and unjust experiences.

Martin Whitfield MSP laid a motion before the Scottish Parliament on the one-year anniversary of the passage of the UNCRC (Incorporation) (Scotland) Bill. The motion requests Scottish Government to set out a timescale for the Bill’s reconsideration. The motion has received cross-party support and will soon be debated.

Scottish Government has said the payment will double from £10 to £20 a week by April 2022. It will then rise to £25 per week by the end of the year. This benefit will be extended to under-16s by the end of 2022.

Children reflected on life at home, at school and in the community and to consider what helps create a supportive, nurturing environment for all children to grow up in.

Using interviews, an online survey and conviction data, this new research explores differing pathways to being convicted from childhood to early adulthood. Looking at 4,300 people’s criminal and anti-social behaviour from ages 12 to 35, the findings uncover that people’s pathways vary considerably depending on their early life circumstances and fulfilment of rights.

Scottish Government has strongly disagreed with the UK Government's proposal to replace the Human Rights Act with a "modern Bill of Rights". It said the Act is “one of the most important and successful pieces of legislation ever passed by the UK Parliament.” The argument echoes similar themes to Together’s response, which stated that the Human Rights Act plays a critically important role in protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout the whole of the United Kingdom.

Care Experienced children and young people are encouraged to take part in a new Digital Wellbeing survey. The survey focuses on digital rights, safety online and maintaining relationships. Those who are members of Young Scot will get Young Scot points for completing it too!

The legislation that has come into force removes the defence of “reasonable punishment” and makes all forms of physical punishment against children, such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking illegal. The law will apply to everybody in Wales, including visitors.

This new report captures the experiences of pupils and parents in schools across Britain, including insights from focus groups with over 1600 children and young people in Scotland. Lower income families share difficulties making the most of school life and taking part in special activities and events due to cost. The report includes ideas and suggestions from pupils and families about how events can be made more inclusive and examples of good practice from schools.

A new incorporation law has been approved by the States Assembly of Jersey. This means that in every aspect of decision-making, policy and practice, Members of the States Assembly of Jersey will have to pay due regard to children's rights.

The ‘Prevent Strategy’ is the part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy aimed at preventing individuals “becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.” However, civil society expresses deep concerns and widespread criticism of the strategy as it targets children disproportionately, interfering with their right to privacy and to freedom of expression, religion and assembly.

The ‘Together: A Whole Family Approach for Young Carers’ project has developed tools and interventions to support the social inclusion and engagement of young carers in Germany, Italy, Greece and Scotland. The project aimed to develop these resources to support young carers and help professionals to adopt a whole family approach, encouraging open communication about illness and care in order to improve relationships within the family.

Children and young people continue to be at the forefront of environmental activism. Despite climate change impacting children’s rights significantly, children continue to be excluded from decision-making processes and laws do not always protect their rights. CRIN has conducted research on 43 countries looking at how laws protect or fail children’s environmental rights, their right to protest and how children have access to courts to seek environmental justice.

Launching in four countries – France, Ireland, Portugal and Romania - this project uses data collection, monitoring and child rights based indicators to identify the proportion of children placed in residential care compared to those placed in formal family-based care. This work aims to monitor the extent to which children in alternative care receive high quality, inclusive, family and community-based care.
