As part of the Scottish Government’s consultation on Nutritional Requirements for Food and Drink in Schools (Scotland), Children’s Parliament facilitated workshops with children and young people in order to explore their views on and experiences of the food and drinks provided in school. In addition to the workshops, an online survey about school food was facilitated with a further 201 children and young people between P4 and S6 from six of the schools.

The Scottish Government has published an updated framework on preventing harmful alcohol use which aims to put the voices of children and young people at the heart of the development of preventative measures on alcohol use. As the latest figures reveal, Scotland has high rates of alcohol-related harm in international terms, as does the UK. In 2016, total alcohol consumption in the UK was more than 16% above the European regional average (WHO, 2018).

Eurochild has published its 2018 report on the European Semester, based on assessments provided by 23 Eurochild members in 18 countries. The report aims to highlight Member States’ progress in implementing the European Commission ‘Recommendation on Investing in Children: Breaking the Cycle of Disadvantage’ and the ‘European Pillar of Social Rights’. It provides an analysis of the extent to which children’s rights and wellbeing are being prioritised within the 2018 European Semester cycle and aims to provide policymakers at EU level with a child-centred perspective to evaluating countries’ progress towards economic and social objectives.
