A survey of 2,180 young people aged 16 to 25 has revealed a quarter feel "unable to cope with life" since the start of the pandemic, increasing to 40% among those not in work, education or training.

The report adds to a significant body of evidence that physical punishment has a long-lasting impact on children’s health and behaviour. It calls on England and Northern Ireland to follow Scotland and Wales’s lead in granting children equal protection from violence.

Research has shown nearly half (46%) of children who started reception class in 2020 were not “school ready”, compared with 35% in 2019. Teachers reported a key factor was less time spent at nursery due to lockdown.

A New Zealand study has shown young children are intuitive urban planners. The study, involving 27 children aged two to five, used a range of activities to ascertain children’s views, finding that they were considerate, thorough and thought not only of their own needs, but of other city dwellers.
