Exploring crime as children transition to adulthood

Using interviews, an online survey and conviction data, this new research explores differing pathways to being convicted from childhood to early adulthood. Looking at 4,300 people’s criminal and anti-social behaviour from ages 12 to 35, the findings uncover that people’s pathways vary considerably depending on their early life circumstances and fulfilment of rights.

Scottish Government responds to the Human Rights Act reform consultation

Scottish Government has strongly disagreed with the UK Government's proposal to replace the Human Rights Act with a "modern Bill of Rights". It said the Act is “one of the most important and successful pieces of legislation ever passed by the UK Parliament.” The argument echoes similar themes to Together’s response, which stated that the Human Rights Act plays a critically important role in protecting human rights and fundamental freedoms throughout the whole of the United Kingdom.

Wales introduces new ban on physical punishment

The legislation that has come into force removes the defence of “reasonable punishment” and makes all forms of physical punishment against children, such as smacking, hitting, slapping and shaking illegal. The law will apply to everybody in Wales, including visitors.

New report: The cost of having fun at school

This new report captures the experiences of pupils and parents in schools across Britain, including insights from focus groups with over 1600 children and young people in Scotland. Lower income families share difficulties making the most of school life and taking part in special activities and events due to cost. The report includes ideas and suggestions from pupils and families about how events can be made more inclusive and examples of good practice from schools.

New report looks at the impact of counter-terrorism measures on children’s rights

The ‘Prevent Strategy’ is the part of the UK’s counter-terrorism strategy aimed at preventing individuals “becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.” However, civil society expresses deep concerns and widespread criticism of the strategy as it targets children disproportionately, interfering with their right to privacy and to freedom of expression, religion and assembly.
